Summer Course on Psychology for Sustainability: A Human-Nature (Dis) Connection in the Anthropocene Epoch

09-13 July 2024 Jatinangor and Bandung

Disconnecting from nature at both individual and societal levels may negatively influence sustainability and may be (re)produced and experienced across a spectrum from the individual to the societal, from local to global, and from micro to macro levels. On the other hand, greater material, experiential, psychological (knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, emotional and affective), and philosophical connections to the natural world shape the values and paradigms that underpin human action for sustainability. This course aims to deepen our understanding critically of how disconnection from nature is one of the main features of psychology that may render social-ecological crises of our time.

The Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Padjadjaran is excited to invite you to our Summer Course on Psychology for Sustainability, scheduled for July 9th to 13th, 2024, in Jatinangor and Bandung, Indonesia. This intensive five-day program is crafted to provide participants with critical insights into the socio-ecological crises of the Anthropocene epoch, empowering you to contribute effectively to sustainable practices in various contexts and extend psychology’s influence as both a discipline and a collective practice.

Designed for university students, professionals, and environmental enthusiasts, this course offers a rich blend of academic and practical experiences. Participants will engage in diverse activities, including both online and offline meetings, indoor and outdoor experiential learning, and collaborative exploration. The course will commence with a public lecture anticipated to attract 200 to 250 attendees, setting a stimulating tone for the ensuing sessions.

Throughout the course, we will cover a broad spectrum of topics such as community participation in climate change actions, developing an ecological worldview, the psychological impacts of global climate change, and cultural perspectives on the human-nature connection. Additionally, participants will explore practical themes like pro-environmental behavior, sustainable policy, and innovative solutions like forest healing to address ecological anxiety. The program will also include an exhibition showcasing the translation of knowledge into actionable sustainability practices.
